{"id":507,"date":"2024-02-28T13:44:29","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T13:44:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brighter2morrow.org\/?p=507"},"modified":"2024-02-26T13:56:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T13:56:13","slug":"trip-to-the-zoo-a-day-of-firsts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/trip-to-the-zoo-a-day-of-firsts\/","title":{"rendered":"Trip to the Zoo: a Day of \u201cFirsts\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Friday, January 6, 2024, Peshawar\u2019s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) provided a state-of-the art hybrid bus that took 25 girls and 40 boys from <strong>Brighter Tomorrow,<\/strong> accompanied by two female and two male teachers, on a dedicated road trip to the Peshawar Zoo that lifted them high above the city and plunged them underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This excursion was another remarkable day of \u201cfirsts\u201d for the child laborers, who are enrolled in <strong>Brighter Tomorrow<\/strong>\u2019s literacy program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An almost aerial perspective of the city allowed them to see structures within the Bala-Hisaar Fort that were previously obscured by the fortress\u2019s towering walls. The underground tunnels provided a unique subterranean experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_121942-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_121942-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_121942-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_121942-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The children had their first encounter with an escalator at the Bus Bay and their first experience descending in an elevator. Escalators and elevators may be fundamental elements of contemporary living,\u00a0 but in the city of Peshawar, they are limited to specific locations such as the Peshawar International Airport and shopping malls catering to the elite segment of society.\u00a0 And, to the children\u2019s delight, also to BRT stations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_123306-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_123306-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_123306-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_123306-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sheer joy on the faces of these children as they ascended the escalator and descended in the elevator captured the profound impact of this novel experience.&nbsp; The only stairs they were accustomed to were the ordinary steps in the <strong>Brighter Tomorrow<\/strong> school, which was the tallest building they had ever visited.&nbsp; Most of their neighborhood was comprised of single-story houses. Being in an auditorium was another first as was watching a movie on a big screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_144218-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_144218-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_144218-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/focusinginternational.org\/brightertomorrow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240105_144218-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact was mesmerizing for the children, who had never before seen a large screen movie in a theater, but at most had caught glimpses of movies on small mobile screens in workshops or TVs in tea shops or the houses where they worked.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterwards, the Education Officer held a quiz competition regarding animals and biodiversity \u2013 another first, in which the children actively participated.<br><strong>Brighter tomorrow <\/strong>is a unique program that allows working children to achieve literacy and numeracy after eating a high calorie meal and teaches them resiliency and other crucial psychosocial skills.
